It’s no secret that gamers have been waiting for 27″ 4K high refresh rate OLED monitors for a very long time – but the wait is now finally over!
MSI sent us over an early sample of their new MSI MPG 272URX 4K 240Hz QD-OLED gaming monitor, and while we cannot put it through our usual tests, we’re happy to share some of the details with you!
Image Quality
There are no surprises when it comes to brightness, colors and contrast as the image is bright and vibrant with true blacks as we’ve come to expect from QD-OLED panels.
The most apparent improvement is, of course, the high 4K UHD resolution, which on a 27-inch screen results in a high pixel density of roughly 166 PPI (pixels per inch) – the highest we’ve seen on a high refresh rate OLED display!
As a result, you get stunning detail clarity with sharp text and details, as well as plenty of screen real estate.
The panel seems to be using the same RGB subpixel layout as third-gen panels, which along with the boosted pixel density completely removes the issues with fringing on small text and fine details.
Thanks to the monitor’s wide color gamut and consistent image quality with wide viewing angles, it also appeals to photo and video editors. As it was the case with MSI’s previous OLED models, you can find dedicated sRGB, Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 color presets in the OSD menu.
Equipped with a 5-layer tandem OLED panel with the EL Gen 3 technology, the MSI MPG 272URX achieves lower power consumption while maintaining peak HDR brightness of 1000-nits.
Performance
The 240Hz refresh rate ensures buttery smooth motion clarity with low input lag, while OLED’s instantaneous pixel response time speed completely eliminates trailing artifacts behind fast-moving objects.
Additionally, variable refresh rate is supported for tear-free gameplay up to 240FPS.
Features
MSI’s robust burn-in prevention features are available on the MSI MPG 272URX as well. We went into detail about what each option does in our MSI MPG 341CQPX review, which you can check out for more information.
You can also expect a 3-year warranty that covers burn-in!
The OSD menu is controlled via a directional joystick for quick and easy navigation, and you’ll find plenty of useful features, such as crosshair overlays, on-screen timers, a refresh rate tracker, Night Vision (improves visibility in dark scenes), Optix Scope and HDMI-CEC for consoles.
Design & Connectivity
The stand of the monitor is sturdy and offers full ergonomic support, while the design involves ultra-thin bezels and passive cooling via a heatsink.
The screen has a typical QD-OLED semi-glossy surface with anti-reflection coating, which makes the image quality more vivid, but it’s also more reflective and raises the black level under direct lighting, so you’ll have to mind the lighting in your room for optimal viewing experience.
Connectivity options are abundant and include two HDMI 2.1 ports with full 48 Gbps bandwidth, DisplayPort 2.1 with UHBR20 for full 80 Gbps bandwidth, a USB-C port with DP Alt Mode and 98W Power Delivery, a headphone jack and a dual-USB 3.0 hub.
The MSI MPG 272URX also has built-in KVM functionality.
Price & Similar Monitors
At the moment, there’s no word on pricing and availability, but we’ll update the article as soon as we have more information.
Conclusion
The MSI MPG 272URX is an impressive gaming monitor that many have been waiting for and we’re looking forward to putting it through our tests once it’s released, so stay tuned!
